We are not rich journalists and all the other colleagues who cover the region know how difficult it is to convince chief editors to run stories about the country in their newspapers or tv-programs. Africa die hards like us constantly live on the edge of total bankruptcy to survive and to produce stories. We also know how expensive it is to work in this country since in this part of the world bureaucracy and corruption can be a real pain in the ass and can be very expensive. There are no roads here and no normal means of transport, no phone connections, no clean water and no electricity. This makes this project very expensive.
We would not have been able to pull this project off without the help of several organizations and private companies. That is also the main reason why will publish their logos on our blog and we really hope that You'll link up to their websites to check out what they are doing.
The kayak we are using is a Prijon Excursion tandem & expedition kayak. We send the people of Prijon in Germany a short mail explaining that we would like to receive info about their kayaks and the following day I was already contacted by Pieter Delvaux of www.kayakshop.be, the local distributor of Prijon in the Benelux with the message that Prijon would give us the kayak and all the other accessories for free to paddle down the Lukenie. The people of Prijon just liked our project and told me that it was an honor for them that one of their kayaks would be used for this cause. Pieter also gave us a proper kayak training.
It took us only 5 minutes to convince the people of the World Wildlife Fund to help us clearing the kayak trough Congolese customs, one of the most hazardous custom agencies in the world. The WWF is one of the few international agencies that are operational in this 'forgotten' part of the Congo. We hope that our findings will contribute to their actions in this part of the country. With the people of ABAC (www.abac-fret.eu) we made a deal to ship our kayak to Kinshasa at a very low rate. Luc Lauwers did the impossible for us to convince his associates to lower the price of the shipping. The same goes for the people of Air Kasai (www.airkasai.cd) in Kinshasa who will fly our kayak to our point of departure Kole, in Eastern Kasaï.
My American friend Gerard Smith of the Ramapo Outdoor shop (www.ramapo-outdoor.com) in the Flemish town of Genk, a small town just next to the village where I live, provided us with all the necessary gear to survive the living conditions in this 'heart of darkness', one of the most primitive areas on earth. Thanks to him we will walk on good shoes, we'll sleep in mosquito protected hammocks and we'll be able to filter our water. The manager of 'Foto Bögemann' in Genk (www.bogemann.be) was crazy enough to borrow us a couple of shock- and water proof digital cameras to shoot stills for this site. I'm not a big fan of of digital cameras – I prefer black & white film – but we won't be able to process our negatives in the jungle.
VBC computers (www.vbc.be) in Bree (Belgian province of 'Limburg) builds laptops and PC's on demand. Our request was not very simple: we needed a rock solid laptop that could resist the heath and the humidity of the Congolese 'Hearth of Darkness. Our webmaster karel Baeten brought us into contact with his cousin Sabrina Baeten and her husband Bart Vanderwegen. They immediately understood our needs and they borrowed us a very strong laptop to work in Congo. They also provided us the necessary webspace to construct our site.
In Kinshasa we could count on the goodwill of the Minister of Information Lambert Mende who was born in the Lukenie area and who immediately understood the potential of this project to show the problems of the local population to the outside world. Former Minister of Defense Adoloph Onusumba, who was born just outside Lodja opened his big address book and contacted several local authorities. They phoned around to convince local authorities to allow us to work in this enclaved area and by doing this we could save a lot of time and cash. The current Minister of Environment and Tourism José Endundu has been a very close supporter of our work last year and we are sure that he will also help us in this project. Françoise Van de Ven of the 'Federation des Industriels du Bois (FIB) brought us in contact with most of the logging companies in the country. And via Françoise we were able to visit already some of the areas we will cross now with our kayak. Without their support this project would be suicidal.
We're not the only fools who venture into the dark interior of this country; the people of 'Go Congo' even organize trips into this part of the country. Nous ne sommes
pas de riches journalistes et tous les autres collègues qui couvrent la
région savent combien il est difficile de convaincre les rédacteurs en
chef pour exécuter des histoires sur les pays dans leurs journaux ou
programmes de télévision. Ils savent aussi combien il est coûteux de
travailler dans ce pays car, dans cette partie du monde, la bureaucratie
et la corruption sont une vraie douleur. Il n'y a pas de routes ici et
pas de moyens de transport, pas de liaisons téléphoniques, pas de l'eau
potable et d'électricité. C'est ce qui rend ce projet très coûteux.
Nous n'aurions pas été en mesure de finaliser ce projet sans l'aide de

Il nous a fallu seulement 5 minutes pour convaincre les gens de la
World Wildlife Fund
afin de nous
aider à expédier le kayak à travers la douane congolaise. Le WWF est
l'une des rares organisations internationales qui sont opérationnels
dans cette partie «oubliée» du Congo. Nous espérons que nos résultats
vont contribuer à leurs actions dans cette partie du pays. Plus

tres simple: on avait besoin d'un laptop qui était durable et qui
pourrait résister a la chaleur et à l'humidité. Notre webmaster Karel
Baeten nous a mis en contact avec sa cousine
Sabrina Baeten et son mari
Bart Vanderwegen. Ils ont compris
directement nos besoins et à part d 'un laptop hyper solide ils nous ont
offert le webspace nécessaire pour construire notre site.
À Kinshasa,
nous avons pu compter sur la bonne volonté du
Ministre
de la communication et des médias Lambert Mende,
qui est
originaire de cette partie du Congo et qui a immédiatement compris le
potentiel de ce projet qui est de montrer les problèmes de la population
locale au monde extérieur.
Ancien Ministre de la Défense Adoloph Onusumba, qui est également de la région, a ouvert son carnet d'adresses et des contacts avec plusieurs autorités locales. Ils ont soutenus le projet auprès des autorités locales afin de nous permettre de travailler dans cette zone enclavée et, ce faisant, nous pourrions économiser beaucoup de temps et d'argent. L 'actuel Ministre de l 'Environnement et du Tourisme José Endundu a toujours été une aide dans notre travail sur le terrain et on est sûr que, pour ce projet, il va nous aider aussi. Ma compatriote Madame Françoise Van de Ven de la Féderation des Industriels du Bois au Congo nous a mis en contact avec la plupart des exploitants forestières qui sont actives sur notre trajet. Sans leur aide ce projet serait suicidaire.

même des voyages dans le pays. Michel, le patron de cette agence, est
un vraie pionnier dans le domaine. Le Congo est un des plus beaux pays

développement du pays. On espère que notre projet peut contribuer au
développement du tourisme dans la région. Car c est aussi la
responsabilité de le presse de montrer le côté positive du pays.

We zijn geen rijke journalisten en andere collega's die de regio coveren zullen beamen hoe moeilijk het is om eindredacteuren te overtuigen om verhalen uit Congo in hun nieuwsbladen of tv-programma's te laten verschijnen. De "Africa die-hards" zoals wij leven constant op het randje van bankroet om te kunnen overleven en publiceren. We weten tevens hoe duur het is om in dit land te werken, vooral door de corruptie en bureaucratie die er heerst. Er zijn geen wegen, geen gewone transportmogelijkheden, geen moderne communicatiemiddelen, vaak geen zuiver water of electriciteit. Alles samen zorgt dit voor veel kosten bij het uitvoeren van ons project.
De kajak die we gebruiken is een Prijon Excursion tandem & expedition kajak. We hebben in een korte mail aan de mensen van Prijon Duitsland uitgelegd dat we info zouden willen over hun kajaks en reeds 's anderendaags nam Pieter Delveaux van www.kayakshop.be , de verdeler van Prijon voor de Benelux, contact met ons op om te melden dat Prijon een kajak en alle benodigdheden zou schenken om de Lukenie af te varen. De mensen van Prijon waren enthousiast over het project en vertelden dat het voor hun een eer zou zijn dat een van hun kajaks zou gebruikt worden voor dit doel. Pieter gaf ons ook een echte kajak training.
Welgeteld 5 minuten waren nodig om de mensen van de World Wildlife Fund te overtuigen om ons te helpen om de kajak door de Congolese douanes te loodsen, een van de meest onvoorspelbare agentschappen in de hele wereld. De WWF is een van de weinige organisaties die operationeel zijn in dit "vergeten"deel van Congo. We hopen dan ook dat onze ervaringen kunnen helpen bij de uitoefening van hun taken hier. Met de mensen van ABAC (www.abac-fret.eu) konden we afspreken dat ze onze kajak tegen een zeer redelijk tarief naar Kinshasa zouden vliegen. Luc Lauwers deed al het mogelijke voor ons om zijn partners ervan te overtuigen om de prijs voor het vervoer te laten zakken. Hetzelfde kan gezegd worden van de mensen van Air Kasai (www.airkasai.cd ) die onze kajak van Kinshasa naar ons vertrekpunt in Kole, Oost-Kasaï zullen overvliegen.
Mijn Amerikaanse vriend Gerard Smith van Ramapo Outdoor Shop (www.ramapo-outdoor.com) in het Limburgse Genk, een kleine stad vlakbij het dorp waar ik woon, voorzag ons van alle noodzakelijke uitrusting voor het leven in "het hart van de duisternis" een van de meest primitieve gebieden op aarde. Dankzij hem zullen we op goede schoenen lopen, zullen we gerust slapen in onze hangmatten die voorzien zijn van een tentzeil en mosquitonetten en zullen we ons water kunnen filteren. De manager van Foto Bögemann in Genk (www.bogemann.be ) was zo vriendelijk om ons enkele schok- en waterbestendige digitale fototoestellen mee te geven voor het maken van foto's voor deze website. Normaal fotografeer ik enkel op zwart-wit film maar die kan je in de jungle niet ontwikkelen dus zullen deze toestellen zeer goed van pas komen.
VBC computers (www.vbc.be) in Bree (in de Belgische provincie Limburg) bouwt pc's en laptops op bestelling. Onze vraag was niet erg eenvoudig. We hebben nood aan een oersterke en vocht- en warmtebestendige laptop om de tocht in de extreme omstandigheden van het Afrikaanse regenwoud te overleven. Onze webmaster Karel Baeten bracht ons in contact met zijn nicht Sabrina Baeten en haar echtgenoot Bart Vanderwegen, beiden zaakvoerders van VBC Computers. Ze begrepen onmiddellijk wat we wilden en leenden ons een oerdegelijke laptop om in Congo te kunnen werken. Ze verzorgen de hosting en registratie van deze website.
In Kinshasa hebben we kunnen rekenen op de goodwill van de Minister van Informatie, Lambert Mende, die zelf geboren is in het District van de Lukenie. Hij begreep de kracht van dit projectie, de mogelijkheid om de problemen van de plaatselijke bevolking aan de buitenwereld kenbaar te maken. De vroegere minister van Defensie, Adoloph Onusumba, die juist buiten Lodja geboren werd, deed beroep op zijn grote kennissenkring en contacteerde verschillende lokale autoriteiten. Beiden overtuigden heel wat plaatselijke beleidsmensen van het belang van dit project en zorgden er zo voor dat we een hoop administratie en geld konden besparen. De huidige minister van milieu en toerisme, José Endundu was het afgelopen jaar erg geïnteresseerd in ons werk en we zijn zeker dat hij ons zal helpen met dit project. Françoise Van de Ven, van de "Federation des Industriels du Bois (FIB) bracht ons in contact met de meeste bosbouwbedrijven die aktief zijn in het gebied. Ook via Françoise konden we reeds enkele gebieden die we nu zullen doorkruisen met onze kajak bezoeken. Zonder de steun van de bosbouwbedrijven zou onze onderneming een zelfmoordmissie zijn.
We zijn niet de enige "gekken" die reizen in het donkere binnenland van Congo. De mensen van Go Congo organiseren zelfs reizen door dit deel van het land.
